BNWLA filed a writ petition against the respondents for the free and easy availability of acid in open markets. Mahfuza Begum, on 18.08.98, was beaten up by her husband and was admitted into the Hospital. For fear of her filing a case against them, they entered into her father’s house at about 1.00 am on 24.08.98 and broke the door, waking her sister up, and pouring acid on her sister’s head, who screamed out at the burning. They also threw acid on her father who sustained burn injury in his chest.
The Court issued a Rule Nisi upon the respondents to show cause as to why they shall not directed to control the free and easy availability of acids in open market and regulate its sale for the prevention of acid related offence and why the acid victim survivors should not be treated as backward section of citizen and make special provision for their treatment and rehabilitation in the society and/or such other or further order or orders passed as to this court may seem fit and Proper.
