After Writ Petition No. 4456 of 2009 was filed by BLAST, Ain o Shalish Kendra (ASK) and Coalition for the Urban Poor (CUP) challenging an arbitrary announcement threatening the forceful eviction of approximately 5,000 inhabitants of the Gudaraghat Basti, Kafrul, Dhaka, the High Court issued a rule on 01.07.2009, stating the eviction to be without lawful authority, and issued an injunction restraining the respondents from evicting the slum dwellers. On 04.10.2012, the contemner respondents operated an illegal, arbitrary and forcible eviction operation in the said area, in violation of the Court’s order.
The High Court issued a Rule Nisi upon the contemnor respondents to show cause as to why a contempt proceeding should not be drawn for violating the order of stay dated 01.07.2009, and why they should not be punished accordingly.
